Tosca at Semperoper Dresden
The celebrated singer Tosca lives only for art, until political intrigue suddenly disturbs her life and that of her lover, the painter Cavaradossi: When Cavaradossi hides the political refugee Angelotti, he is targeted by the unscrupulous police chief Scarpia, who has long had his eye on Tosca. To save Cavaradossi, Tosca not only has to betray Angelotti, but also give herself to Scarpia. Premiered in 1900, Puccini’s »Tosca« is practically unique in its close interweaving of political power and personal passions. The German premiere of this opera about love, jealousy, betrayal and tyranny was held in Dresden in 1902. Director Johannes Schaaf has found a timeless narrative style for his staging.
Angela Gheorghiu is Tosca, Teodor Ilincai is Mario Cavaradosi and Alexey Markov is Scarpia. Giampaolo Bisanti conducts the orchestra of the Dresden opera house. Performance on Febraury 23, 28 and March 1 and 7.

Cavalleria rusticana in Barcelona
Amounting virtually to twin artistic manifestos, they become, in Michieletto's version, the two sides of the same coin, with characters from Cavalleria rusticana appearing in Pagliacci and vice-versa. The topics of the two operas, both set in 1950s Italy, also intertwine in the visual resources used. A veritable "slice of life", to quote from the sung prologue to Pagliacci.
Teodor Iincai si Turridu in Cavalleria rusticana, alongside Oksana Dyka (Santuzza), Ángel Ódena (Alfio) and Elena Zilio (Mamma Lucia) at Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, on December 7,10,12,15,19 and 21.

In none of the opera’s characters does the light of reason sparkle. Prisoners of their situations, prisoners of their own reins of control and of their own making, above all prisoners of a deadly, ever-looming spiritual power greater even than secular hegemony… Verdi captures the essential helplessness of human beings entangled in this network of terror: at best, death brings release.
